Overview of China's LED Chip Industry in 2023

2023-07-10

LED chips use semiconductor chips as luminescent materials to manufacture diodes. When a forward voltage is applied at both ends, the charge carriers in the semiconductor undergo recombination/level transitions, causing photon emission and generating light. LED chips have the characteristics of high luminous efficiency, small size, long lifespan, fast response, low driving voltage, and high color purity.

From 2018 to 2019, the development of China's LED chip industry entered a downward cycle due to external environmental risks such as the Sino US trade war. Driven by favorable national policies and the maturity of Mini/Micro LED technology, the LED industry has entered an upward cycle since 2022.

Due to the outstanding energy-saving effect of LED lighting products, the country will promote LED lighting as one of the main paths for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. In July 2022, the "Implementation Plan for Carbon Peak in Urban and Rural Construction" clearly stated that by 2030, the proportion of efficient and energy-saving lighting fixtures such as LEDs will exceed 80%. Based on the promotion of national policies, the number of government procurement orders for LED lighting fixtures will continue to grow in the future, which will drive the growth of the LED chip manufacturing and packaging industry market size. It is expected that by 2027, the size of China's LED chip manufacturing market will reach 25.9 billion yuan, and the LED chip packaging market will reach 95.7 billion yuan.

Definition and basic principles of LED chips

LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a solid-state semiconductor device that can directly convert electricity into light. A semiconductor chip consists of two parts, one is a P-type semiconductor and the other is an N-type semiconductor. When two semiconductors are connected, a "P-N junction" can be formed. When current passes through a wire and acts on a semiconductor chip, electrons are pushed from the N region towards the P region, where they recombine with holes and emit energy in the form of photons, known as LED luminescence.
